How to Sleep with a Migraine or Headache

All to often when I don't get enough sleep I'll end up with a migraine.... which I've found usually can only be treated with drinking lots of water and getting sleep.

Here is a look at some other ways that might work for you.

headacheHave you ever laid there at night in your bed not being able to get to sleep because you have a terrible headache that won’t go away. Many people around the world suffer from headaches and migraines, but they don’t know how to get rid of them. I have suffered from several severe concussions in the past that have given me major headaches during the evening that prevented me from getting to sleep. It is nearly impossible to get yourself to sleep if you have a headache or migraine, so what can we do about it. Fortunately, for all of us who suffer from headaches at night there are some home remedies that we can do to get rid of them. In this article, our team will share the top five home remedies to get rid of a headache so you can get a good night’s sleep.
Inhale Lavender OilLavender
The first home remedy to get rid of your headache is Lavender oil. Not only does it smell good but it is also very helpful to get rid of headaches and migraine pains. The best way to use Lavender oil is by putting two to four drops in three
cups of boiling water and inhale the vapor. It is also safe for you to apply it externally without diluting it and inhaling it that way. You can apply it on your bed pillow or sheets and breathe it in all night as well, just don’t consume it orally.
Dieting
One of the best home remedies for getting rid of headaches and migraine pain is changing your diet. Dieting is difficult for many people; however, it is proven that certain foods affect the frequency and severity of headaches and migraine pain. Some of these foods that trigger headaches are chocolate, peanut butter, bananas, citrus, meats with nitrates, foods containing tyramine, and foods that are fermented or pickled. When you eat these triggered foods, you should write them down in a diary and pay attention to the reactions you get.
Scalp MassageScalp massage
A scalp massage is another way to reduce headache and migraine pain before going to bed. A study done in Brazil proved that if you massage the area between your eyes and ears (the occipital nerve) for a couple minutes it will help with the pain. Scalp massages are great because not only do they help with headaches but they feel good as well. You can either massage this spot yourself, or even better ask someone else to do it for you.
Caffeine Intake
Drinking too much caffeine can cause or even worsen your headaches that prevent you from getting to sleep at night. If you drink more than several cups of coffee or soda a day then you are consuming too much caffeine and you need to cut back. However, if you are an avid coffee or soda drinker and you completely eliminate your caffeine consumption this can also cause headaches, so you need to slowly decrease the amount of caffeine you drink. On the other hand, if you don’t consume caffeine regularly, a cup a day can help you with your headaches as well. Caffeine helps constrict the dilated blood vessels around your temples, which relieves headache pain, hence the reason you find caffeine in pain relief medication.
Stand Up Straight
Having poor posture can create muscle tension and put pressure on your nerves in which can cause headaches. This is especially important to know if you are one who sits and works with computers all day. Many people who sit at computers all day form a head forward posture, which is terrible for your upper back and neck. The forward head posture is for every inch that your head moves forward it makes your head feel an extra ten pounds to your upper back and neck, making them constantly contracted. If you sit with your eyes directly over your shoulders, it will reduce the tension in your upper back and neck, and will help eliminate your headaches and migraines so you can sleep at night.
